On November 17, 1939 by Mrs. Josie Cheeter at her home in NW Washington, DC to seven like-minded individuals. As a result of that meeting, the Springfield Baptist Church held it's first worship service on November 26th, 1939.

A pastoral search committee was formed, and the search for a pastor began. Rev. Eddie Gallman accepted the call and became the 1st pastor of Springfield. The initial 37 members worshiped in our first church home at 1337 Seventh Street, NW. Some of the original families, including the Yeldells, still worship here today.
In November 1941, Springfield bought a new church, located at 1429 Sixth Street, NW. Rev. Gallman established the Deacon Board and the Trustee Board there. Under his leadership, the Senior Choir, Young People's Choir, Children's Choir, Usher Board, Flower Circle and Women's Auxiliary were established. Pastor Gallman's daughter was the gifted and renowned gospel-recording artist, Mrs. Edna Gallman Cooke. Springfield prospered spiritually and financially under Pastor Gallman until his death in August of 1952.

Reverend H. C. Mack, the Assistant Pastor, succeeded Pastor Gallman as the 2nd pastor of Springfield. Under Pastor Mack, the Ever Ready Chorus was organized and a live radio broadcast of the evening worship services were initiated.
Reverend James H. Marshall was installed as the 3rd Pastor of Springfield on November 25, 1954. Under his leadership, Springfield's first Constitution and By-laws were adopted, a tithing program was instituted, Sunday church bulletins were printed and Junior Church was organized. Springfield purchased property at 8th Street and Kansas Avenue, NW as the site for a new church building. Pastor Marshall renamed the Young People's Choir as the Angelic Chorus. Pastor Mack served faithfully until his death. Reverend Grant Coffman served as interim Pastor and established Boy Scout Troop #307.

Reverend James J. Abney was installed as the 4th Pastor of Springfield. Under his leadership, Reverend George Boomer served as the Assistant Pastor, and the first full-time secretary was employed. Pastor Abney established Vacation Bible School, the Youth Department, the Board of Christian Education, the Scholarship fund and a Ward System. Due to illness, Pastor Abney resigned in 1963.
Reverend H. Wesley Wiley was installed as the 5th Pastor of Springfield in February 1964. He reorganized the Youth Department and organized the Chancel Choir. Pastor Wiley resigned as Pastor in 1969.

On June 23, 1971, Reverend Louis Benjamin Jones, Sr. was installed as the 6th Pastor of Springfield and served untiringly for 36 years. During his first seven years, membership increased an average of 200 members per year. Under his leadership, the church was blessed spiritually and financially. Our worship services, in and outreach services, and facilities were expanded to accommodate the needs of the membership and the surrounding community.
Committed tithers topped 500 members under Pastor Jones. A new edifice, our current home, was erected and dedicated on January 25, 1976. Pastor Jones implemented a bond system that allowed members to purchase loan certificates to pay off the second trust mortgage on the church. Under his pastorate, an elevator was installed in 2002 was added to the front of the church, and the old church was turned into the Springfield Baptist Church Child Development Center.
Pastor Jones instituted the Wednesday Noon and Evening Prayer Meeting and Testimony Hour, the Praise and Worship Team, the Wednesday night Bible Study, the Laymen's Auxiliary, and the New Members Orientation Program. He created the Mothers' Board, the Missionary Department, the Men's Fellowship, the reorganized Women's Auxiliary, and the Mass Choir. He allowed Youth retreats and lock-ins, the Women's Conference, Men's Workshop, Family Conference and the Annual Church Picnic.
The Music Ministry grew to include the True Believers, the Voices of Zion, Revelations, Psalm 150, Genesis 2:23, the Sanctuary Choir, the Angelic Sanctuary Choir, the Angel Choir (reorganized), the Expressions of Joy, the Angels of Christ and the Springfield Music Institute. Springfield recorded its first CD with Reverend Michael Reid - Bind Me Closer.
Pastor and Sister Jones set up the Helping Hands Committee, which Sister Jones ran for many years. Pastor Jones instituted the Christian Council on Substance Abuse, the Evangelistic Committee, The Springfield Gospel Hour radio broadcast and the Tape/CD Ministry.
Pastor Jones passed away on February 23, 2008.
